The Staten Island Advance is reporting that Kraft Foods has recalled it’s Nantucket Trail Mix, saying the pistachios could be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people. It is often associated with fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Reportedly, a 60-year old woman from Staten Island’s Annandale section suffered salmonella like symptoms shortly after eating the product. The woman reported the incident to Kraft and planned on seeing her this morning. The bag was purchased at the Costco store in the New Springville section of Staten Island on Monday and the store notified her yesterday of the potential salmonella contamination.

Patrons Sickened in Upstate Applebee’s

1010wins and MSNBCare reporting that up to 100 patrons were exposed to Shigellosis bacteria after eating at an upstate Applebee’s restaurant in Camillus, New York. The bacteria is associated with consuming food or water contaminated with fecal matter. The bacterial infection can cause painful or bloody diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps beginning a day or two after exposure. The infection usually abates within 5-7 days afterward but sometimes medical attention is required. The cause of the outbreak is under investigation but officials are focusing their search on lemons and limes.
